Eating in La Ceiba is part of the trip. The city mixes everyday Honduran cooking with the Garifuna flavors of the coast and fresh Caribbean seafood. Here is what to try and where to find it.
Dishes you can’t miss
- Baleada: Honduras’ favorite breakfast (and lunch, and dinner). A large flour tortilla with refried beans, cheese and mantequilla (Honduran sour cream); a baleada “con todo” adds egg, avocado or meat.
- Tapado: Garifuna fish and seafood soup with coconut milk and green plantain.
- Machuca: mashed plantain served with a coconut fish broth, another Garifuna classic.
- Fried fish with tajadas: a whole fried fish with green plantain chips, best eaten by the sea.
- Sopa de caracol: conch soup with coconut, so famous it has its own song.
- Pan de coco: soft coconut bread, perfect with coffee.
