It is one of the most common questions before a trip to Honduras. The short answer: thousands of tourists visit La Ceiba every year without trouble, but, as in any Central American city, it pays to take precautions. Here are the facts and the tips that actually help.
What the travel advisories say
The U.S. State Department rates Honduras at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, because of crime, and lists only Gracias a Dios department, in La Mosquitia, as “Do not travel”. Atlántida, where La Ceiba is, and the Bay Islands are not singled out. Always check your own government’s current advisory before you travel.
Practical tips
- Taxis: use taxis your hotel recommends and agree on the fare before you get in; at night, always take a taxi.
- Valuables: don’t show off jewelry, expensive phones or lots of cash on the street.
- ATMs: withdraw cash in daylight, at machines inside banks or malls.
- Tours: book activities with established operators; they know the routes and places.
- Documents: carry a copy of your passport and leave the original at the hotel when you don’t need it.
- Insurance: travel with medical and travel insurance, especially if you plan to raft or dive.
- Emergencies: the emergency number in Honduras is 911.
The tourist areas
Downtown, the Zona Viva, the Cangrejal valley and the coastal communities welcome visitors every day. Ask your hotel which areas to avoid and use common sense, as you would in any city.
