From La Ceiba you can visit the two great Maya cities of the region in one trip: Copán, in western Honduras, famous for its sculptures and hieroglyphic stairway, and Tikal, in the jungle of northern Guatemala, where temples rise above the treetops. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
What to expect
This is a multi-day trip with organized transport. The drive from La Ceiba to Copán Ruinas takes about 7 to 8 hours; there you visit the archaeological park and the colonial town. Then you cross into Guatemala for Tikal, best explored early in the morning, when howler monkeys call from the forest.
Good to know
- Length: several days; depends on the itinerary you choose.
- Documents: bring a valid passport to cross into Guatemala.
- What to bring: comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and cash in lempiras and quetzales.
