Utila is the smallest and most laid-back of the Bay Islands, and one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive. Its reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and at certain times of year whale sharks can be seen near the island.

What to expect

The ferry leaves from the La Ceiba dock and reaches Utila in about an hour. The island has dozens of dive shops offering fun dives and certification courses. An Open Water course usually takes 3 to 4 days, with theory, confined-water practice and dives on the reef.

Good to know

  • Length: at least 3 days if you want to get certified.
  • Ferry: runs daily from the La Ceiba dock; buy tickets ahead in high season.
  • What to bring: swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen and seasickness tablets if you need them.
  • Note: wait at least 18 hours after diving before you fly.

How to book

Book the Shuttle Guacamayos Utila dive certification package, with ferry and lodging.
