Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge

Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge protects more than 13,000 hectares of mangroves, lagoons and channels between the Cuero and Salado rivers, west of La Ceiba. It is a wetland of international importance (a Ramsar site) and one of the few places in Honduras where manatees live.

What to expect

The trip starts in the village of La Unión, the gateway to the refuge. From there you glide quietly through the channels by boat, between the mangroves. Howler and white-faced monkeys, herons, kingfishers, turtles and sometimes crocodiles are common sights. Seeing a manatee is possible but rare: they are shy and spend most of their time underwater.

Good to know

  • Length: half a day from La Ceiba.
  • Best time: early morning, when wildlife is most active.
  • What to bring: binoculars, insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen and water.
  • Who it’s for: families, photographers and birders. It is a gentle trip with no physical effort.

How to book

Book the tour with Shuttle Guacamayos, including transport from La Ceiba.
