Palm-roofed houses and boats in Chachahuate, a Garifuna village in Cayos Cochinos

The Best Beaches Near La Ceiba

La Ceiba sits on the Caribbean Sea, but the best beaches are not downtown: they are a few kilometers away, in the Garifuna villages along the coast and on the islands. Here is our list, from closest to farthest.

1. The city beach and seafront

Next to the Zona Viva in the La Isla neighborhood, the city beach is great for a sunset walk and a bite by the sea. It is not the best for swimming: after rain, the rivers bring cloudy water to the shore.

2. Corozal

About 10 kilometers east on the road to Trujillo, Corozal is a Garifuna community with a wide beach, fishing boats and small restaurants serving fried fish. It is the quickest beach escape from the city.

3. Sambo Creek

A few kilometers farther east, Sambo Creek is another Garifuna village with a relaxed feel, seafront restaurants and the departure point for many boats to Cayos Cochinos. Learn about Garifuna culture while you are there.

4. El Porvenir

To the west, the municipality of El Porvenir has long, quiet beaches near the entrance to Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. A good choice if you want peace and quiet.

5. Cayos Cochinos

For postcard white sand and turquoise water, head to Cayos Cochinos: a protected archipelago about an hour away by boat, with reefs for snorkeling. It is a full-day trip.

6. Roatán and Utila

The Bay Islands have some of the best beaches in Honduras, like West Bay on Roatán. From La Ceiba you get there by ferry in one to two hours; see how in our La Ceiba to Roatán and Utila guide.

Beach tips

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water: the Caribbean sun burns fast.
  • In the village beaches, buy food and drinks from local businesses.
  • Don’t leave your things unattended on the sand.
  • To reach the beaches east of town, a taxi or rental car is the easiest option.
